Replacing the USB drive

Calgary Municipal Land Corporation shares project information with media, project partners, community groups, architects and construction teams. Before partner packages, they did it by handing out USB drives and printed material.

Since July 2024, partner packages have lived inside CMLC's existing site. Each package gathers the assets and downloads for one project in one place, so sharing it means sending a link, and CMLC can update the material without sending anything out again.

Visitors enter a few details before they download, so CMLC can see who took which material and when. If a media outlet downloads a package, the team knows coverage may be coming and can prepare for it.

Access designed in from the start

The University of Calgary's Global Learning Toolkit is open to international education staff across Alberta's institutions, and to nobody else. The #HalfTheStory learning platform shows lesson titles, objectives and grade levels to anyone, keeps each teacher's notes private, and lets a school manage its own teachers and seats.

Both were designed with the gate in place from the beginning. Adding access control later means fitting a login onto a structure built on the assumption that everything was public, and that is hard to do cleanly.
