We’re a Calgary-based studio with an eye for design and digital implementation.

Our team handles information architecture, content management, user experience, and interface design, treating each area as a unique discipline worthy of its own attention.

Studio

Built by Field was founded in 2018, and is comprised of Jesse McLean, Dee Harris, and Andrew Reist. Some of our team works in our Calgary studio, and some work remotely, but we’re all real people, and we’re all committed to your project.

How we estimate

We size our projects in story points on a Fibonacci scale. Complexity compounds rather than accumulating steadily, so pricing projects this way helps us overcome natural overconfidence and more accurately assess workloads.

Complexity in scoping technical work goes through how we apply this to a real project.

How we work

Architect

Every project opens with a content survey. This includes brochures, planning documents, an unused photo shoot, even older retired websites well past their use. Even in this early stage, check-ins run weekly or every second week for the length of the project, with the work documented in shared folders, Slack, and a project wiki.

Design

We build your project from the ground up, with legibility and accessibility in mind from the start. Brand work happens here; your logos, colours, and tone might currently exist as scrap files and an old PDF, so we pull them into a toolkit your whole organization can use.

Build

We choose technology on a project basis instead of using the same stack every time. It's important to us that your product is performant, and that your team can still update your content in three years without needing a developer for every change.

Grow

Product launches include a private session walking your team through what was built, with written documentation available so you can start editing on day one. We build flexible systems, so if priorities shift, projects can be pivoted instead of requiring a rebuild every few years.
