We set a performance budget at the wireframe stage and check the work against it as the site is built. Pages stay static where they can, images are sized to fit, and we measure on real phones over real connections.
A budget from the wireframe
Most of a site's speed is settled when its pages are specified. We set a budget before the design is drawn and check the work against it as we go, because tuning a finished site recovers much less.
Pages are static where they can be, images and video are sized to the space they fill, and the browser gets only the code a page needs.
Testing on real devices
Lab scores are good at catching regressions but make a poor target. We measure on real phones over real connections, because that is how visitors meet the site.
Why speed matters
Faster pages do better in search and lose fewer visitors while they load. Most of the speed comes from leaving things out, like a script, a font weight or an oversized image, and each thing left out saves time on every page load for the life of the site.
When we moved Alberta Ecotrust Foundation from WordPress to Next.js and Prismic, their pages loaded faster and their team got an easier way to manage content.
