A map is an interface, not an illustration. We build interactive mapping experiences, from 3D districts to self-guided tours to live open-data layers, where spatial storytelling runs on real infrastructure: vector tiles, MapLibre, and content models that let clients update the map themselves. Not pins on a map.
Not pins on a map
Most organizations that need a map get a widget: an embedded frame, a scatter of markers, a search box. That's fine for finding a parking lot. It fails the moment the map has to explain something, like how a district is changing, what's accessible from where, or why a place matters.
We treat maps as products. That means a map experience designed around what people are trying to learn, a data layer built to carry it, whether GeoJSON, vector tiles, or live APIs, and a content model behind it so the map keeps up with the world it describes. We reach for MapLibre first: open source, no vendor lock-in, and every layer of the cartography under our control.

A district you can walk before it's built
The Culture + Entertainment District is a decade-long story that CMLC was telling with a static image. We replaced it with an immersive 3D map of the district: custom building models, accessibility information, and a Stories feature that walks visitors through curated journeys. Everything is managed in Sanity, so as the district evolves, the map evolves with it, including the construction impacts CMLC can now plan around.
“This was our second attempt at a map—our first being a static, image-based solution with significant limitations. Built by Field helped us evolve it into a much more responsive, dynamic, and dimensional tool.”

A city's art collection in one place
Calgary's public art, spanning city-owned pieces, publicly funded works, and community projects, was scattered across sources with no shared front door. For Calgary Arts Development we built the Calgary Public Art Guide: location-based browsing, artist profiles, multimedia documentation, and self-guided tours anyone can assemble. The city's Open Data API feeds the map in real time; Sanity gives the team full control of the rest.
How we build them
Every mapping project pairs two disciplines that rarely travel together: cartographic design and content infrastructure. We design the experience, deciding what renders at which zoom, how stories unfold, and what a phone gets versus a wall screen. Then we build the pipeline behind it, from tile generation to the CMS fields an editor uses to move a point. The result is a map your team can keep alive without us.
