Content modelling
Web · Structure

We don't build pages; we build content structures that generate pages. Before design starts, we work out what types of content exist, how they relate, and how they'll be managed over time, so a program is a program and a story is a story, not paragraphs trapped in a layout. It's the least visible part of our work, and the reason our sites still hold up years after launch.

Structure is the strategy
Websites rot from the inside. Not the design, the content: programs described in six places, pages nobody dares delete, a CMS where finding the right field is tribal knowledge. It happens when content lives as pages instead of structure.
So we model first. Before design starts, we audit what exists and work out the actual types: what a program is, what a story is, how they relate, who maintains them. Pages become queries over that structure. It's the least glamorous phase of a project and the most consequential, because it decides whether the site still works in year five.
Programs that generate pages

Momentum's site had grown until courses and programs were indistinguishable from ordinary pages. Signup flows varied course to course, and nobody could say which pages were canonical. We rebuilt the foundation: courses and programs as structured, reusable models that generate their own pages. The organization has kept growing since; the model just keeps absorbing it.
“Their solutions were elegant, thoughtful, and intuitive. Years after its launch, we still get compliments on our website.”
Two websites, one structure

Vibrant Communities Calgary was maintaining two sites: its own, and Enough for All, Calgary's poverty reduction strategy. The relationship between them was unclear to everyone, including visitors. The fix was a model, not a merge: content recategorized as Levers, Stories, Campaigns, Resources, Articles, and Events, with a hierarchy that made one platform out of two brands. It has been easy to maintain ever since.
“Built by Field led our web rebrand and significantly improved both our website’s usability and overall brand presence. They built an intuitive backend that makes content updates easy, baked in SEO best practices from the start, and set up clear analytics to track impact. They are consistently responsive, quick to handle small fixes, proactive about uptime and security, and deliver everything on time and within budget, which is why we chose to continue working with them on an ongoing basis.”
Stories, indexed by what they fund
Alberta Ecotrust's supported projects carry their own topics and funding streams, so the index filters itself. A new program area is a term in the model, not another page to build.

What you get
A content audit that tells the truth about what you have. A model of types, fields, and relationships, argued through with the people who will live in it. A schema that enforces it, a migration that honours the old content, and an editing environment your team can run without us. We've moved organizations off WordPress, Webflow, and Squarespace this way, and the destination is always the same: structure that outlasts the redesign.
