  1. Website Unification and Rebrand

    2020–2021

Bringing structure and cohesion to a city-wide strategy

In 2020, Vibrant Communities Calgary reached out to us as their two websites—one for Vibrant Communities Calgary, and one for Enough for All—had grown difficult to manage and were leaving visitors confused about how the two organizations related to one another.

Both sites had substantive material with program information, campaign coverage, and strategic resources. What was missing was hierarchy. Without a clear relationship between Vibrant Communities Calgary and Enough for All, and without a content structure to guide users through what they found, the sites read as collections of informational pages rather than a coherent platform. Unifying them meant honing in on their design philosophy and resolving the brand ambiguity, not just consolidating URLs.

Built by Field led our web rebrand and significantly improved both our website's usability and overall brand presence. They built an intuitive backend that makes content updates easy, baked in SEO best practices from the start, and set up clear analytics to track impact.

We began with an audit of both sites and developed new content models to replace the existing flat page architecture. Content was recategorized into six types—Levers, Stories, Campaigns, Resources, Articles, and Events—giving the site a structure that editors could work within and users could navigate. This new structure was built to follow the actual shape of the organization's work, rather than falling back to the inherited logic of what had been built before.

While Vibrant Communities Calgary had an existing logo, the broader visual language was largely undefined. We built a complete design system including typography, colours, and layout principles that gave the site a consistent, professional register across all content types. A set of custom icons was built to represent Enough for All’s Levers of Change, each one tied to a key focus area such as Housing, Food Security, Employment, and others. Rendered in a halftone dot pattern, the icons became a unifying visual thread, giving the strategy a tangible presence on the site.

The platform launched in early 2021, built on Next.js with Prismic as the CMS. Since then we've continued to develop it alongside the team, building a more fully-realized navigation system, a new collage section for building annual reports directly in the platform, and ongoing maintenance and improvements as the organization's needs have grown.

Built by Field is consistently responsive, quick to handle small fixes, proactive about uptime and security, and delivers everything on time and within budget, which is why we chose to continue working with them on an ongoing basis.

What began as a consolidation project produced a platform with the structure to grow with the organization, and a visual identity strong enough to carry the weight of a city-wide strategy.
