Sell Your Clients Better Websites
Why design studios still bring in a development partner, where page builders stop working, and how we like to work alongside you.
For a long time, a big share of our work came through other studios. Brand and design firms brought us in as the development partner, and we built the site their team designed. Milk Jar's site, designed by Bamff (now Public Eye), started that way, and so did Tweed's, with Sajak & Farki.
That kind of work has mostly dried up. Part of the reason is that plenty of designers now build the whole site in Webflow, and for a lot of projects that works fine. For some it doesn't, and those are the ones worth bringing a development team into.
Where page builders run out
Webflow, Squarespace and page builders like Elementor are good at letting someone change a hero and publish a page. They're not built for structure. When a site is really a catalogue of related things, like programs, locations, products or an archive, building it page by page gets unwieldy over time. We've rebuilt more than one Webflow site because the team behind it couldn't manage it any more.
What we bring is the structured side. We model the content so each thing is entered once and shows up everywhere it's referenced, and we build a library of sections the client's team can put together into new pages themselves. Milk Jar has run their own site in Sanity since launch, and most of our work with them since has been adding new sections rather than rebuilding.
We're not against templates. I started my career hacking Squarespace sites to make them do what we needed, and we've done a Squarespace reskin ourselves. The platform should follow what the client needs, and sometimes that's a well-customized theme.
How we like to work with you
You hold the client relationship, and you can mark us up however makes sense. We'd rather work under our own name than under your company's email addresses, and we agree on lanes early, because clients hate having to referee two agencies. Bring us the work and we'll be happy to do it.
If you have a client whose site has outgrown its page builder, email us at hello@builtbyfield.com.
