Springboard Performance · Website
An event-driven experience
Springboard Performance is an event-driven organization, with festivals, residencies, performances, and community at the core of what they do. Their website needed to reflect that from the get-go.
For Springboard, events had to be the organizational core of the entire site architecture, so we built structured content models—artists, vendors, programs, events, venues, organizations—bearing this in mind. A program can reference multiple events, each pulling from the same underlying data, and an artist's profile, created once, surfaces wherever it's relevant across the site.
Springboard's visual identity shifts with the artists and events it presents, which meant the site couldn't settle into a single color register, as each event page needed its own tone. To handle this without putting the burden entirely on editors, we built a custom color-sampling system in Sanity CMS. When an event image is uploaded, an algorithm analyzes it and extracts the most prominent colors, presenting a palette of options for the editor to select from. Their choice becomes the page's theme, applied as a duotone treatment on imagery and carried through the visual language of the entire page.
Typography, spacing, and visual weight were calibrated to match the new design philosophies we developed for Springboard’s brand. Their flexible letterforms appear as background textures throughout, reinforcing the identity without overshadowing event imagery.
The site also needed to accommodate containR, Springboard's arts and culture hub near the Sunnyside CTrain Station, built from retrofit shipping containers and featuring an Art Park, performance series, and mural installations. It operates as a distinct public venue and community space, so it needed its own section adjacent to Springboard's festival programming, but clearly its own.
Built in Next.js and Sanity, the site launched in September 2023. The website provide’s Springboard's team the tools they need to manage a complex, ever-changing list of events while empowering them to present these events with creative vision.
